Personal Development: Lateral or Vertical?
Posted on | June 15, 2011 | No Comments
Following on from Piaget’s groundbreaking work on the developmental stages of children in the 50′s, others (Loevinger, Kohlberg, Graves) researched adult development.
Development theory describes the unfolding of human potential towards deeper understanding, wisdom and effectiveness in the world. It provides a way of understanding how people tend to interpret events, and how they are likely to act in many common and uncommon situations.

How Personal Leadership Can Transform the Workplace
Posted on | June 7, 2011 | No Comments
Many organisations face the challenges of creating a workplace that can both attract and retain engaged employees. As in most (or even all) service organisations (like: health care, government, public transport, etc.) success is determined by front-line staff. They perform the job, are in direct contact with the customers and should be fully empowered to be successful.
This was also recognised by the Interior Health (IH) Authority in British Columbia. They developed and implemented a program in personal leadership for all front-line staff in the organisation. This learning, it was believed, would lead to the transformation of the work environment and, subsequently, the culture of the workplace. They called the program: The Leader Within.
Overview of Leadership Research

Leadership is being studied for over thousands of years. And still we do not know exactly what it is. Maybe the best predictor on the question if someone will be a successful leader is the question if he/she has done it successful before.
Through all this research, however, we have come to know quite a lot about leadership. This article provides a brief overview of the various approaches through recent history and explains a more contemporary research focus.

Some weeks ago I wrote a post about education at primary and secondary schools in our Western world. About an initiative at a school where they teach their students lessons in happiness.
And I asked the question if, in order to prepare children for the challenges of the 21st century, education needs to change and more initiatives like this are necessary.
Buddhist Lessons for Business

What can we learn from ancient wisdoms and the major religions? Last week (March 16th, 2011), I was at a ‘lecture’, organised by the company Heart Selling. It was there first, so called HHH Event, where the three H’s stand for: Head, Heart and Hand.
Theme of the evening was: “How can Buddhism help to get business at a sustainable level, after these years of crisis and chaos?” Speaker of the evening was Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche, a contemporary Tibetan Buddhist teacher, who travels around the world, 11 months a year.
Lessons in Happiness

To what extend is our changing society requiring a different approach to education, both in primary and secondary schools, as well as in universities? Is there a higher need for lessons in creativity, communication or even in happiness?
Recently, when going through a pile of old articles, I ran into an article in ‘NRC Handelsblad‘ from February, 2009. It was the story of Theo Wismans, teacher at the Eijkhagen College, a secondary school in Landgraaf, who was teaching his students lessons in happiness.

Six Degrees Could Change The World
Posted on | February 11, 2011 | No Comments
A couple of weeks ago I watched the documentary ‘Six Degrees Could Change The World‘ at National Geographic Television. Climatologists were investigating the effect of a temperature increase of 1 degree Celsius on our planet.
Even if the current green house emissions would stop at once, the temperature would raise between 0,5 and 1 degree (Celsius). This is because of the existing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Changing Society

We live in interesting times. Our western world changes at high speed, we are in the dragons tail of a financial crisis, organisations are more and more facing complexity and high dynamics, knowledge is getting more and more important, professionals are not seeking lifetime employment anymore and natural resources become scarce.
I believe that we are on the eve of a new world. A world in which more and more people are aware that the growing individualism and the abuse and neglect of our beautiful planet will not leave a great future to our children. It is time for a different way of living together, working together and being together.
